Full Description
A possible field system of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs of 1948 as cropmarks to the north of Carmen's Wood, Butley parish, centred on circa TM38125036 (S1). The visible features cover an area of circa 5.5 acres, but the field system may be more extensive and simply be obscured by geological variations within the area of the field. The possible fields are roughly rectangular in shape and are aligned to the eastern side of a trackway that is visible running roughly NNE-SSW for about 200m. The alignment of the fields does not match that of the surrounding Post-Medieval field system, but the trackway does appear to meet trackways of at least Post-Medieval date at the corner of the field. It is therefore difficult to ascribe a date to the field system from the photographic evidence alone.
