Full Description

An earthwork bank of probable Post Medieval date is visible on aerial photographs just above the saltmarsh on the northern bank of the River Stour, about 500m to the south of Brantham Hall Farm, centred on circa TM12143342, Brantham parish. A path is noted running alongside a field boundary in this location on the first edition Ordnance survey map of 1882, but as neither the path or the boundary are marked in the hachured convention usually used for an embanked feature, it is not possible to be sure whether the bank was originally intended as causeway or boundary (S1). It is possible that the bank was created as a field boundary but that part of it's length was employed as a convenient causeway until it was destroyed in the creation of the modern sea wall, which largely follows the route of the earlier path. (S2, S3)
