Full Description

A Roman salt production site or 'saltern' is visible on aerial photographs as a 'red hill', located at TM 29404159, to the south of Kirton Creek. The 'red hill' covers an area of around 50m by 30m and is located on a small spur at the edge of the wetter ground. (S1-S3) A site visit by Linzi Everett of Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service confirmed the presence of briquetage and Roman pottery.
