Full Description
A number of practice trenches of First World War date are visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks centred on circa TM211430, approximately 150 metres to the north-east of Hillingdon House, Purdis Farm Parish. They are clearly visible on the fairway of a golf course, apparently cutting across a double ditched enclosure, also visible as a cropmark (see PFM 014). The date and function of this oval feature are unclear and it may in fact be related to the military activity in this area, and the trenches in particular. Most of the trenches are zigzag and crenellated in form, typical of First World War earthworks, but at least two linear ditches can also be seen which may be military in origin, and have therefore also been transcribed.
