Full Description
Extensive ditched field systems of probable medieval or later date can be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs to the north of Bucklesham, Bucklesham parish, centred on circa TM240424. A number of conflicting orientations are apparent suggesting multiple phases of enclosure are present. Several cropmark boundaries are on a similar alignment to, and appear to meet, the extent boundaries at circa TM239423. These also follow the line of the parish boundary to connect with the remains of boundaries marked on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, but since removed. A section of ditched trackway also matches that shown on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1904. This supports an interpretation of a possible medieval or post-medieval date for their creation. An irregular field and track system centred on circa TM240423 however, does not follow the same orientation and appears much less regular in form. It is possible this dates from an earlier, possibly later prehistoric phase of land use.
