Monument record MDM 111 - Possible Post Medieval sand extraction site, visible as earthworks.

A possible post-medieval sand extraction site is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, to the north-west of Withersdale Hall, Mendham parish, centred approximately on TM 278806. The largest feature visible is the extraction pit in the south-west corner of the field, which is marked on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, and which therefore predates this time. Similar but smaller pits are visible in a field across the lane to the west, which survive to be marked on the modern map. Unlike these, the pit described here has now been filled, probably to allow the field to be cultivated. Similarly, the earthwork remains of possible tracks, field boundaries and a possible building platform to the east of the pit, probably related to its extractive role, have also been levelled by modern agriculture.
