Full Description

The ditched boundaries of a possibly medieval field system can be seen as faint cropmarks on aerial photographs to the immediate north-west of Botwrights farm, Mendham parish. Although not marked on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884, the earthworks fit into the 19th century field pattern well, a pattern which probably originates from the medieval or post-medieval period. This is particularly noticeable to the north-western side of the site where a ditch or hollow-way parallels the line of an extant field boundary, possibly marking the route of a trackway. (S1)
