Full Description
A 5 metre wide ditch in Mendham parish, visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1951, may be the remains of a large medieval moated site or the line of a grubbed up field boundary (S1). The ditch forms two sides of a rectangular enclosure approximately 115 metres long and at least 65 metres wide. The northern side is defined by a narrower ditch that connects with an elongated pond, possibly part of the original ditch that retained water. There is no evidence of a ditch on the western side. It may be the remains of a precursor to the moated site immediately to the north (MDM 037) which is even larger.
