Full Description

Field boundaries, tracks or hollow ways and possible house platforms pertaining to a possible shrunken medieval village can be seen as earthworks on aerial photographs to the east of Manor Farm, Bungay parish, centred on circa TM 343877. The principal features in this area include a series of paths, hollow ways or boundaries visible as ditches, arranged almost in a grid pattern to the south east of Manor Farm. The largest of the rectilinear enclosures formed by these ditches measure between 50 and 60 metres to a side and may be the remains of field boundaries. Smaller enclosures to the north of the area, circa 20 to 25 metres in size, may be crofts or house platforms. The axis of the site matches that of the possible track and field boundaries to the west of Manor Farm (Bun 076). Hodskinson's map of 1783 shows only a few buildings in this area, but includes the annotation 'Bungay Upland Gr' (presumably green), possibly supporting the interpretation that this area was previously been the focus of a small settlement. Further earthworks and cropmarks are visible to the north and it is possible these earthworks are associated with the cropmark enclosure to the south-east (See BUN 010, BUN 077-082). A probably post medieval path, marked on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1884 and probably connecting with that visible in BUN 078, crosses the site from north-west to south east.
