Full Description
Over two kilometres of probable relict flood defence bank and flanking ditches of possible post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks and cropmarks crossing Beccles marshes, Beccles parish, centred on circa TM 440920. The earthwork continues eastwards on an irregular course from a point at circa TM 434915 where it diverges from the route of a path or track, curving to the north and west enclosing a large area of marsh before ending at circa TM4 438926, just to the south of the modern bank. Two or three linear features radiate from the eastern side of the bank, which may be further relict banks, constructed to reclaim the marsh on a cellular basis, or simply the remains of tracks or causeways which connected with the main bank, which would have provided a convenient route across the marsh. As these connect with the extant bank known as Worlingham Wall, suggestive of interconnected reclamation, the former interpretation seems most probable. The relict bank crosses the location of the possible enclosures BCC 062. (S1-S6)
