Full Description

Possible relict flood defence banks or causeways are visible on aerial photographs as extensive linear earthworks centred on circa TM 493924, traversing Share Marsh , Carlton Colville parish. The westernmost of the banks, circa 1200 metres in length and orientated roughly NNW-SSE, appears to be aligned upon a small kink or dogleg in the River Waveney main flood bank (CAC 038). This may indicate that at one point the two earthworks intersected and formed part of the cellular reclamation of the surrounding marshes, as may be likely with CAC 039. However, the bank seems relatively slight in construction, and its apparent relationship with the similar banks to the east of this complex, which connect with extant tracks, may support an interpretation as causewayed tracks. Nonetheless it is possible that some of the earthworks recorded here began their existence as water management features and, once this function was redundant, continued in use as convenient routes across the marsh.
