Title Fieldwalking Survey Report, Hut Field, Rendlesham RLM 071
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2023

Abstract/Summary

A community fieldwalking survey was undertaken between January and March 2023 on Hut Field in Rendlesham, Suffolk. The fieldwalking was organised as part of the community archaeology project Rendlesham Revealed: Anglo-Saxon Life in south-east Suffolk, led by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The survey was conducted by volunteers from the Suffolk Archaeological Field Group (SAFG) led by Tom Cox from University of East Anglia with support from volunteer Katie Osbourne. The project was led by Faye Minter and Alice De Leo from Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service.

Description

A grid area was laid out in the field as 30m grid squares using a Leica GNNS before the survey. This grid was the same as that used for the earlier magnetometry survey on the site. The grid squares that were surveyed were numbered A8-L10. Finds bags were labelled with the corresponding grid numbers. The grids were walked systematically in 2m transects for 100% coverage. All surface finds were collected and placed into bags labelled with the corresponding grid number. The entire area of the field was not surveyed due to time constraints. The field is under arable cultivation, previously planted with wheat, which had been harvested and the field left undisturbed over winter. The level of ground cover was therefore variable, with the visibility getting progressively worse as weeds emerged.
