4/45 Woodhouse Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Mainly C16. A main range with 2-cell cross-wing set forward to
right; in the angle of these 2 ranges is a further wing of c.1800. Timber
framed with mid C20 textured render. C20 black pantiles. 2 storeys. Various
small-paned casement windows, mostly of C19 date. Cross-wing has overhanging
gables and in the side wall the lintol of a projecting first floor window.
Front of main range has lean-to porch with C19 6-panel door (upper 4 panels
glazed) and reeded architrave. Flanking the doorway are carved pilasters and
consoles of early C17 date, brought from elsewhere, perhaps in C19. The
pilasters have sunk faces with fruit and flower motifs; the capitals (one
mutilated) have acanthus leaves, helices and 4-lobed flowers. Each console
has a carved head spouting foliage and tendrils; one contains a shield showing
an animal, the other a shield carved with a merchant's mark. Internal stack
at junction of the 2 ranges, with plain oblong shaft. Close studding and
tension braces visible internally in side wall of cross-wing. One ground
floor room in wing has ovolo axial bridging beam and slightly moulded joists.
Wind-braced clasped purlin roof over centre of main range. C19 stair by
stack. Encircling medieval moat.
