Description

Trenched evaluation in advance of residential development to rear of County Hall building. Two trenches c. 1.4m deep were excavated within the footprint of the proposed apartment block which revealed evidence for Saxon activity in an area fronting onto Bond Street at a depth of 0.6m below present ground surface. Remainder of evaluated area heavily disturbed by later construction.The natural subsoil comprised bright yellow/orange silty sand with gravel and was buried beneath a deposit of brick and concrete rubble mixed with dark sandy loam. The second trench was under a tarmacked area, underneath was a deposit of dark silty loam c0.6m thick and overlay the natural subsoil.
