Description

A DBA was undertaken in advance of proposals for the construction of a university campus, and includes a study of documentary evidence and borehole data for the site. The assessment concluded that the site lay outside the Saxon town, and was largely wasteland until the later medieval/early post medieval period there is documentary evidence for construction of dwellings on the site. From the early post-medieval period there is evidence for structures of the site. Maps of the 19th and early 20th century depict substantial structures on the site, so a degree of truncation is likely to any deposits. The boreholes revealed a depth of made ground, which relates to successive reclamation and use of the area, and it is likely that any archaeological deposits will occur towards the base of the made ground and in the upper alluvial deposits.
