Description
A rectangular area, measuring approximately 2.7m by 3.6m, had been excavated to a maximum depth of c. 0.4m with a further 0.1m deeper trench around the outer edge. The revealed stratigraphy consisted of a tarmac surface over compacted sand and gravel, over an irregular deposit of tar and gravel, all of which formed the present hard surface of the yard. This overlay a buried topsoil layer which sealed an earlier surface which consisted of crushed mortar over flint cobbles which were set in a further layer of a topsoil type material (brown/grey loam). It is possibly that the crushed mortar is not a surface in itself but the debris resulting from the demolition of an earlier building. No natural subsoil was exposed and no features or artefacts were identified.
