Description
Three visits were made to monitor a series of groundworks for an extension to an oubuilding complex and the terracing of the garden to extend the driveway at the rear of 84 Southgate Street. An area c.10mx4m had been excavated to formation level in advance of the monitoring visit, extending the hard standing further further into the slope and presenting a vertical section 0.9m deep. A second visit was made to examine the footings for the extension, the trenches were excavated to a depth of 1.2m and cut through the present topsoil which was imported and burried a dark loam in which was scattered broken tile and mortar which sealed archaeological features (S1).
