Description

A series of monitoring visits was made to record the archaeological deposits during excavation of the ground works for an extension to the rear of the house. The site of the kitchen extension was terraced into the garden at the rear of the house where, over time, the existing ground level had been raised by accumulated soil deposits. An area c.9mx7m was excavaed by machine under the supervision of the monitoring archaeologist. The esisting ground level being reduced by 1.5m to formation level. The stripped area revealed a group of 8 medieval domestic rubbish pits. Overlying the pits was a thick layer of re-deposited soil, which was distinct from the fills of the pits below. The interface between this and the pits, along with the absence of surfaces, suggested that the medieval ground level had been truncated prior to its deposition (S1).
