The trenches revealed 0.4-0.7m of sandy topsoil above 0.3-0.4m of subsoil. The cart lodge required the excavation of 33m of 0.7m trenches. These trenches varied in depth between 1m and 1.3m. The trench side revealed extensive tree root disturbance with the soil profile being made up of 0.3m of topsoil over 0.3m of subsoil.
