Description

Archaeological monitoring of footings for a new extension to no. 18 Barons Road, Bury St Edmunds did not reveal any archaeological finds or deposits. The footings were excavated to approximately 1m below ground level. The footings were excavated with a small mechanical excavator over the course of two days. The general stratigraphy exposed consisted of 0.3m of mid/dark brown sandy silt topsoil over 0.3m of friable mid slightly-reddish brown sandy silt subsoil. This subsoil overlay natural silty sands and chalky outcroppings to a total depth of approx 1m below ground level (S1).
