Description

Archaeological evaluation in advance of a proposed housing development. 99 trenches were excavated; archaeology was recorded in 37 of them. The trenches were c.30m long by 2m wide. The topsoil was about 0.3m and was generally mid greyish brown sandy loam. Thick deposits of colluvial soil were recorded in the dry valley at the west end of the site. On the lower slopes and at the base of the dry valley were natural deposits of mid reddish brown sandy silt. On the higher ground and upper slopes, a mid yellowish brown clayey sand was present. Underneath the solid geology was comprised of weathered chalk deposits.
