Description
The plot for a double garage at 32 Heycroft, Nayland was visited by Tom Loader for the Archaeological Service, Suffolk County Council on Friday 22nd August. Area excavation for a concrete raft base had been undertaken prior to the site visit and the area was no longer accessible for inspection. A surface water drainage trench was however partially open at the time of the visit (although in the process of being backfilled), which revealed a shallow depth of topsoil overlying a silty sand subsoil overlying sand and gravel.
Upcast from the drainage ditch and the excavated area of the garage was inspected for finds, but nothing of any archaeological interest was encountered.
The applicate failed to contact the archaeological service while the excavation of the garage base was taking place. However the lack of any obvious finds in the upcast suggest that the site was previously unoccupied.
