Description

-Footings excavated prior to visit. Between 0.9 - 1.1m deep. Footings unstable, particularly to north of house. Modern pits seen in northern most trench, with bricks and pipes seen in the fill. They were both visible from just under the grass level. The spoil was retained on site for inspection. -Occasional natural patches were seen at 0.9m deep but otherwise mostly comprised of 0.4m very dark brown grey loam topsoil, over remainder of also very dark brown loam topsoil. Natural, where visible, was a bright orange shingle sand – not clear as trenches unstable but appeared to be natural. -The adjacent plots to the north were at a lower level to this property, but the garden to number 66 was relatively flat. It is likely that the 1m or so of topsoil over the whole plot was a relatively recent addition bought in to level the plot. This extensive landscaping had either destroyed any archaeology or masked it, as no finds or features were seen within the footings or on the spoil heaps (S1).
