Description
Digging work for the footings had been completed shortly before arrival. All of the topsoil had been removed during the construction of a previous structure which had occupied around half the area of the present plot. Subsoil was of orange-brown clay with regular small chalk lumps; patches of blue-grey clay were also observed. Average trench depth was 0.90m from present surface, width was 0.50. Trenches were dug using a 180 degrees wheeled JCB digger fitted with a toothed 0.50m bucket. Ground water had quickly covered the base of the trenches to a depth of 20mm. No archaeological features or finds were observed or recovered.
