Description
The site was visited on the 13th December 2004 in order to inspect the works then underway. Upon visiting the site it was found that an earlier extension had been added to the east end of the existing house but this had not been completed and was to be incorporated into the extension currently underway. See Fig 2 below for a plan of the site.
The area of the extension was at the time of the visit being stripped of topsoil. Which was c.0.4m thick, down to the surface of the natural subsoil. Within the topsoil, at a depth of c.0.15m, a layer of 20th century debris consisting mainly of bottles, jars and broken ceramics, was encountered over the northern half of the stripped area. The natural subsoil comprised yellow boulder clay with occasional patches of grey. The entire area of the extension was stripped resulting in a smooth clean surface. No interventions into the subsoil were evident although had there been any it is likely it would have been easily identified.
No significant archaeological depsoits appear to have been damaged or destroyed by this development. The layer of debris within the topsoil is presumably rubbish discarded by former occupants of the property.
