Description
The central roadway for the development of 18 houses was observed, an area of c.350-400sqm. Approx 0.4-0.5m deep this removed 0.30m of topsoil and the upper subsoil. In the southern 10-15m of the road strip, a buried soil layer of mid brown loam and broken chalk probably infilled a natural hollow. To the north a ridge of natural chalk, c.10m wide and crossing the road strip E-W, rose to a height immediately below the topsoil.
Further to the north this chalk sloped away and was covered by a natural subsoil of orange sands with some evidence of tree disturbance.
No archaeological features were seen so no further trips were made during excavation of footings.
