Description

A watching brief was carried out in advance of the development of a new Hazardous waste Storage area at RAF Lakenheath. The site lies next to building 1218, south of the runway on Lakenheath airfield in an area of numerous scattered prehistoric finds. The entire area of the new building, c. 7m x 20m was stripped to a depth of 70cm onto subsoil of orange-brown sand and the watching brief was carried out at this stage. No archaeological features were seen in the building footprint and, despite thorough examination, no finds recovered from the surface. The soil profile showed two probable buried turf levels, one very recent and one older. Sand deposits over subsoil and the lower turf layer were interpreted as possibly windblown.
