Description
A watching brief was maintained on the construction of a changing room just to the west of the sports dome at Woodbridge School. The area next to the dome was already disturbed. The western edge revealed natural sand and gravel under 400mm of topsoil.
In the exposed section on the western edge, a yellowish clay layer extending for some 2m to 2.5m at a depth of 200mm was noted. This clay layer contained fragments of burnt clay and could well be the floor of a timber built structure, its survival indicating a low level of previous ground disturbance in this area.
Roman pottery and tile fragments were found in the spoil at the base of the section. Their presence may suggest a well preserved Roman settlement in the immediate area.
