Description

Archaeological monitoring was carried out on land close to Bures Mill, Bures St. Mary, in advance of the creation of a fish-pass. A 3m x 5.5m area immediately adjacent the River Stour had been excavated to a depth of c. 1.4m for the construction of a ‘fish ladder’. This cut through a layer of topsoil and into alternate layers of sand and grey river silt relating to localised flooding within the flood plain. No underlying natural subsoil was encountered. No archaeological features or deposits were identified and no artefacts were recovered. The remainder of the project involved the de-silting of an existing channel and was not monitored.
