Description
A hole for pipes and a manhole were observed. It was not possible to get into the hole as it was over 2m deep and the sides were unstable. The section showed 1.5m of varied made-up soil layers; these were mostly fairly clean although one of the middle layers contained peg-tile fragments (see sketch section below). The lowest soil layer was an undisturbed greeny silt/loam which looked ancient (medieval or earlier?). The spoil heap was examined for finds but only peg-tile and occasional animal bone was seen (S1).
