Description

Site visisted 02/09/02. Topsoil partly stripped and trenches for front and east side of new house were open. The northernmost trench was c.4m back from the plot frontage and a layer of chalk was seen in section covering the entire length and extending southwards for c.1m. It was c.31cm below the current ground surface. Topsoil contained 19th - 20th century brick and animal bone and occasional modern pottery. Disturbed dark brown loam layers below the floor to the west end also contained late brick frags. The surface was an orange subsoil at the east end. A rim sherd of a speckle glazed ware jar of probable 18th century date was found at the top of the chalk surface. A large 19th century brick lined well was exposed in the centre of the new building. Spoilheaps were checked. No finds.
