Description
Eight test-pits were excavated, with depths between 0.3 and 0.7m. All were approximately 0.6m wide, usually dug at the lowest point in each quarry pit although some were dug at the sides of the pit where machine access was difficult Results:
The eight test pits encountered a variety of underlying geological layers, primarily chalks but also some areas of clayey sands and pockets of stony silty clays. The natural geology was exposed at depths of between 0.1 and 0.3m below the current surface and no archaeologically relevant deposits or artefacts were observed. The quarry pits are as-yet undated and it is not certain what material was mined from each pit (flints, chalk, gravels, etc). No archaeological finds or features were encountered within test-pits, and only modern detritus was noted within the quarry pits themselves.
