Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on an area of land adjacent to 1, The Street in advance of a residential development. The site was originally part of a large arable field and had been ploughed until recently. 2 trial trenches were excavated, the soil profile was consistent. The exposed natural subsoil comprised a mottled orange and yellow silty sand and lay at a depth of c0.8m below ground level. It was sealed below a 0.5m thick layer of subsoil that consisted of a pale brown to grey sandy silt containing very few stones. This was inturn overlain by the present topsoil, which comprised a brown-grey dense silty loam (S1).
