Description
PROJECT DETAILS
Britannia Archaeology Ltd (BA) undertook a programme of archaeological monitoring on the excavation of garden wall and cart-lodge foundation trenches at Toppesfield Hall, Hadleigh, Suffolk (NGR 602530 242330). The site appears to have remained largely free from development or intrusive ground activity. A fairly thick layer of colluvium has accumulated on the slope down towards the River. Flint wall (1007) was present at the north-eastern end of the new wall foundation trench, adjacent to the existing Hall. It is recorded on the Tithe map of 1839, but not the later cartographic sources. The wall construction materials and stratigraphic relationship with subsoil 1002 would suggest that it is post-medieval in date and is probably associated with the construction of the existing building. The original construction cut of the existing pond (1013) was present in the southern cart-lodge foundation trenches. It has subsequently silted up at the edge and been encroached upon by the colluvium subsoil (1002). The pond appears to have been man-made and is also likely to be post-medieval in date. Cartographic sources show it to have been square in shape until at least the 1920's.
