Description
Three site visits were made to monitor ground disturbances associated with redevelopment of the site.
Preliminary visit recorded soil profiles in test pits excavated through the floor of the exisiting building. It was clear that the previous building had removed any shallow archaeological deposits by cutting into the sloping ground surface.
Second visit was made to record results of trial pits along the adjoining wall of the Hawk public house. Virgin ground was recorded in all three trenches.
Third visit was made prior to laying out of footings. Area to the rear of the former building comprised of a strip of undisturbed topsoil, some 3m wide. A small area of the site was cleared using the on-site JCB to look for archaeological intervensions. Pits were recorded but appeared contempoary with buildings fronting Rectory Street, which may obscure earlier features. No finds were recovered.
