Description

Archaeological monitoring carried out on excavations associated with the Lowestoft South Beach Urgent Coastal Protections Works. This involved four areas of beach that were mechanically lowered to facilitate the construction of a series large rock structure. The beach reduction work for Rock Structures 1 to 3 were carried out at or just below the high water mark and consequently it was only possibly to get a view of the spoil as it was tipped from the machine bucket. The Rock Structure 4 was undertaken above the high water mark and this afforded a good opportunity for the observation of excavation works. The excavation cut into the existing beach to a depth of c.0.6m. No finds or features of archaeological interest were identified (S1).
