Description
An informal archaeological watching brief was carried out during the construction of an extension to 51a Union Street. The work involved examining four footing trenches for the extension and the site of a soak away. No archaeological finds or features were identified. However, the work revealed significant dark silts down to a depth of 1.2m below the turfline. Natural was not encountered. The findings suggest frequent flood inundations of the River Gipping (S1).
