Description

Monitoring of footing trenches did not identify any archaeological features or finds. A previous school building had been demolished and strip foundations were being dug. Trenches along the east side and south-east corner were of considerable depth up to 1.6m. The topsoil layer was up to c1.1m deep along the eastern edge reducing to 0.4m towards the western edge consisting of redeposited sand and gravel mixed with humic loam topsoil. Under this was a buried topsoil c0.3m thick consisting of mid to dark brown humic loam. Below was the original subsoil consisting pale to mid brown silty sand with occasional flits. Sand and gravel natural deposits were revealed along the base of the footing trenches (S1).
