Description

Evaluation and monitoring of footing trenches in advance of the construction of two steel framed buildings. Two trenches were opened within the footprints of the two proposed structures. Trench 1 measured 23.6m long and Trench 2 measured 18.4m. The topsoil consisted of a uniform 0.4m of mid brown humic cultivated sand, sealing a mixed coarse orange natural crag sand. A single ditch was observed during the evaluation, from which a flint flake and single sherd of prehistoric pottery were recovered. Monitoring identified a large, curving likely enclosure ditch and various pit-type features containing Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery, although there had been significant truncation of these deposits. A small pit contained probable redeposited pottery associated with Bronze Age cremations.
