Description

Two test pits measuring approx 0.5mx0.5m were excavated against buildings adjacent to vacant land at the rear of Gainsborough's House, in order to establish the depth of the footings present. Each was cut trou tarmac and associated concrete and/or rubble sub-base c.0.25m thich, below which was a dark brown loamy sand containing victorian/20th century brick, slate and mortar fragments. In Test Pit 1 a service pipe was encountered at a depth of 0.75m and the total excavated depth was 0.96m. In Test Pit 2, the same dark brown material was present under the tarmac but had a much higher water content. At 0.27m deep, a deposit of rough concrete mixed with brick fragments, pebbles and post-medieval tile was seen. The pit was excavated to a depth of c0.6m (S1).
