Description

The site encompasses an area of approx. 9,000sqm located on either side of Ullswater Road. The excavation areas are situated within a development area bounded by Mill Lane to the northwest, the Ipswich to Lowestoft railway line to the southeast and by neighbouring properties to the southwest and north east. The development area is owned by the Flagship Housing Group and is to be developed for housing. Three excavation areas had a combined area of approx 2,000sqm representing 22% of the development area. Area 1 = 809sqm, Area 2= 685sqm, Area 3=505sqm. Houses stood within the development area at the time of the previosu evaluation, although these had been cleared to ground level prior to the open area excavation. The grubbing out of foundations, etc was archaeologically monitored but these were shallow and had not caused any significant disturbance to the archaeology (S1).
