Description

In May and June 2009 archaeological excavation was carried out in advance of the construction of a stamina horse training track 2km in length by 4m wide. It followed an archaeological evaluation undertaken in May 2009. Based on the results of the evaluation (8 trenches revealing a pit and grave), the entire width and length of the track was stripped of overburden. External to the track, the bund and access corridor were stripped of turn (c.10m). Eleven addition trial trenches were excavated. For the majority of the track, the stratigraphy consisted of topsoil (<0.1m) directly overlying the natural geological deposits (0.28-0.36m). A thin layer of colluvium was present in the centre of the northern side at the base of the dry valley and the lowest point on the sites (0.22-0.26m thick) A very thin spread (<0.02m) of similar material was visible at the bottom of the dry valley along the higher south side. A thin spread of cmpact, grey brown and black sandy silt and charcoal with occassional flint and burnt flitn (< 0.05m) located along the eastern side of the track (S1, S2, S3).
