Site Event/Activity record ESF26157 - Evaluation - Greater Gabbard Wind Farm Onshore Works, Sizewell Wents, Leiston

Trial trench evaluation was carried out along the route of a proposed 132kV underground electricity cable and an area of woodland for the proposed site of a sub-station. The archaeological investigation covers an area of aroun 50,000sqm, contained within three arable agricultural fields and an area of woodland. 40 trenches were located to investigate anomalies revealed by aerial photography, geophysical and topographical surveys. 24 trenches were negative. Trenches 1-10 were located on the southerly slope of Rosary Field; topsoil 0.3-0.45m, no subsoil was recorded, natural deposits were a bright yellow to pale orange sand with occasional areas of gravel. As the trenching descended down the slope, a very wide mid-dark brown sandy deposit was revealed within the valley running sw to ne. Topsoil in this area was 0.38-0.46 and once stripped revealed a homogeneous mid-dark brown silty sand, This sealed an even darker brown to dark grey sandy deposit. Most likely represents a natural depression or gully liable to flooding. Trenches 16-17 contained medieval features. Trenches 18-24 were negative. Evaluation is ongoing and will continue into the woodland area to the north-west (S1).
