Description

Evaluation was carried out within the grounds of The Priory Hotel, in order to assess the depth, extent and natural of any archaeological deposits that may survive within the area of a proposed extension. The Priory Hotel and a large proportion of its grounds are situated within a large part of the precinct of the Medieval Franciscan Friary at Babwell. The Friary precinct is classified as SAM (Suffolk No, 159). A small test trench (7sqm) was hand excavated to the level of the undisturbed natural. The topsoil was 0.2m thick and the pale yellow sandy gravel mixed with light brown load layer was 0.15m thick. The undisturbed natural, encountered at 0.35m, consisted of a yellow sandy gravel containing smooth pebbles (S1).
