Description

A monitoring was undertaken within the Abbey Precinct in anticipation of a telephone cable being laid. The proposed route ran alongside the precinct wall of the Abbey, both outside and within the SAM boundary. Two monitoring visits were necessary as the trench was dug in two stages. The first monitoring the levelling of a small area in anticipation of slab laying. The second was upon completion of a small trench within the precinct which was excavated to a depth of no more than 100mm. On crossing the wall the cable was laid through an existing opening and chiselled through modern concrete, leabing the medieval fabric intact. Elsewhere the soil consisted of a uniform dark brown loam, highly disturbed by vegetation. There were no cut features, only pottery sherds in the spoil (S1).
