Site Event/Activity record ESF28458 - Evaluation - Land East of Abbey Hill, Hoxne

Archaeological evaluation for the construction of 3 dwellings and associatedworks. Six 30.00m x 1.80m trenches, a 22.0m x 1.80m trench and a 9.0m x 1.80m trench were excavated. At the top of the stratigraphic sequence in all trenches was topsoil 1000 which was present to a maximum depth of 0.48m in sample section 1. It comprised dark grey/brown, compact, silty sand, with occasional inclusions of medium sub-angular flint pebbles and represented an agricultural topsoil covering the site. Below topsoil 1000 in all trenches was subsoil 1001 which was present to a maximum depth of 0.59m in sample section 3. It comprised mid grey/brown, firm, silty sand, with occasional inclusions of small sub-angular flint pebbles, with pottery present around trial trench 2. This layer represented an agricultural subsoil. At the base of the stratigraphic sequence in all trenches was natural geology 1002; comprised mid yellow/orange/brown, loose silty sand with occasional inclusions of small sub-angular flint pebbles.
