Description
Archaeological monitoring and a programme of geoarchaeological sampling was undertaken during works associated with the installation of the Scylla cable system. This project comprises a sub-sea, fibre optic telecommunications cable system linking Pakefield, Suffolk, in the UK with Ijmuiden in the Netherlands. The cable runs for approximately 26km in UK territorial waters, from Pakefield to the 12 nautical mile limit. The watching brief was conducted in two phases: Phase 1, conducted in May 2021, during onshore trenching and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) works; and Phase 2, conducted in July 2021, during cable landing and burial. A systematic programme of geoarchaeological sampling was conducted concurrently with phase two, including the collection of six cores for geoarchaeological assessment.
