Full Description

Possible site of round barrow, part of group of ?8 - see IKL 002-005 & 072- 074. Sited after OS (S2), probably mislocation of IKL 073?, based on OS 1st edition map of 1843 (S1).
1843: OS first edition 1 inch map shows 4 tumuli (IKL 3,4,5 and either this one or, probably IKL 073)(S1). Taken as this one by OS (S2). 1936: Grinsell records this group thus:- "These barrows, difficult to find and rather disappointing, are all of bowl shape and slight elevation." (S2)(R1).
1962: "No traces remain of a barrow at this point where there is a large shallow hollow, probably an old quarry ploughed over" (S2). OS 1:10,000 1983 edition suggests this hollow is slightly to W of cited grid reference! - see 1977 entry.
1977: "No evidence of a barrow seen at this siting. The site lies on rough pasture adjacent to a large ploughed out hollow" (S2).
It seems likely that this is a mislocation, initially by OS in August 1962 (S2), probably of IKL 073, Priggs `Western most tumulus' and that no barrow was ever sited here.
