Full Description
Badley Hall.
Only about a third to a half remains of the large timber-framed house built in the 1520s or 1530s for Edmund Poley (circa 1486-1548/9). The Poleys had 30 hearths here in 1674. The manor was sold by the nephew of the last Poley in 1735 to Ambrose Crowley of Barking Hall and in 1759 the framework of a building at Badley, 60ft long and 18ft, together with doors and windows, was advertised for sale in the Ipswich Journal (2 March). This was probably the north end of the Hall, containing the great hall and parlour. What remains is the fine service block and cross-entry, with a W porch. Under the plastered E facade there is evidence of brick diaper work and painted plaster, together with carved woodwork. The E facade seems to have been the main one as it fronts the grand approach avenue, Badley Walk (see BAD 008)(S1). Elevation of main frontage, as in 1741, shows building had not begun its decline (R1), though a later map suggests that this had begun by 1772 (R2)(S4).
2013: Monitoring of a service trench to the rear of the property revealed footings of two red brick walls and a red brick drain (S5).
