Full Description
St Mary's Church.
Small church lying in the middle of Church Green, adjoining Badley Walk (BAD 008) on the north side. Consists of a nave, chancel and W tower, together with a wooden S porch. Chancel has an early C13 lancet window and the S doorway in the nave is of the same date. Crown-post roof. The tower has a brick top and a large Perpendicular W window - apparently a later insertion. The Church has a largely untouched C17/C18 interior - benches, bow pews, pulpit and desk. Many monuments to the Poley family (S1).
In 1492 a Chantry was founded in the church by the then lord of the manor, Edmund Rafeman alias Alcoke (S2) for the souls of himself, his parents, his uncle Richard Schyilocke, his wives and his friends and benefactors. Since 1968 this Chantry has been erroneously located in the S of the Hall barn (see BAD 003) but the 1492 will makes it clear that the Chantry was to be in the church. In the C18 the living was a donative in the direct gift of the lord of the manor and it was noted that the incumbent and church wardens had never been summoned to Archdeacons' or Bishops' visitations (S3). Church recently (1989) restored by the Redundant Church Fund.
